Looking particularly scruffy before heading into The Barber Shop – untidy, untrimmed and unkempt all spring to mind.
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to attend a men’s grooming and whiskey event at QT Canberra with the fantastically beard-y Jimmy Niggles, founder of Beard Season.
This was actually my second time meeting with Niggles, as I previously met him at QT in 2016. At the time I promised that in the spirit of beard season I would make an appointment to get a full skin cancer check. Well, 12 months and several sun-exposure incidents later, and I was faced with the embarrassing task of explain to Jimmy that I had not actually kept the promise I made him. It is strange to have to admit something like that to a near stranger, but in part that is the brilliance of Beard Season – I was embarrassed at having not got my skin cancer check, and so I resolved to get one.
In fact, I promised not only to go and get the check, but to also take part in Beard Season 2017 by attempting to grow my own beard.(more…)
What would you say if I told you there was going to be more than 20 leading Australian winemakers, with over 100 Australian wines available for tasting, all in one place with fantastic food; and you could win yourself a double pass to attend?
Meet the Makers is a fantastic combination of winetasting and speed dating that gives customers the opportunity to actually speak with the brilliant minds behind their favourite tipple. You might have a favourite wine from a Vineyard that’s a little too out of your way to visit in person, or you might be like me and refuse to drink anything that isn’t a desert wine. Meet the Makers give you the opportunity to actually discuss the wines available on tasting with the people who produce them, from vine to glass as it were.
Cellarmasters have been running the Meet the Makers events for 4 years now, and the popular events are now finally on their way to Canberra. As we’re in the midst of Autumn, I can’t think of a better way to spend a chilly Friday night than sampling a selection of wines in good company, with great food and the opportunity to pick the brains of some of the industry’s greatest.
But, how can you win yourself a double pass? (more…)
Yours truly in the chair at the QT Barber Shop for the new Mr Bond treatment
When it comes to grooming and taking care of my hair/nails/skin, I am woefully inept for a man of 30-years. I shave with a disposable razor I change maybe once a month, and I treat shaving my face with the same contempt that I do voting or paying rates. These are painful, unenjoyable but ultimately necessary evils that I try to throw myself through as quickly as humanly possible.
Thankfully the team at QT Canberra have got me (and anyone else in the same boat) covered with their fantastic QT Barber Shop. I was recently invited to experience the launch of their premium cut-throat shave offering Mr Bond – just in time for Fashfest 2016. The new treatment coincided with the arrival in Canberra of QT’s Head Barber, Kristian Jones, and so I was able to meet the man running the show as well. (more…)
My first experience of Australian menswear sensation M.J. Bale was when I received a necktie and a copy of their in-store magazine Manual in a gift bag from an event hosted by Q.T. Canberra last year.
The necktie that I received is a gorgeous pale blue wool affair in a very interesting shade and texture, and I was instantly captivated. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worn it since I received it, but I am always complimented when I do, and to this day it remains looking brand new.
I was naturally intrigued then to learn more about M.J. Bale, and subsequently purchased two pairs of the best-fitting chinos I have ever owned in my life from their Sydney store. These chinos are sadly out of commission at the moment (break-up kilos, let’s not talk about it); but their design and the quality of the fabric used in their construction is really something else. I find it a little hard to believe that pieces of such high quality are from an off-the-rack chain, but that’s sort of the whole point of M.J. Bale really. (more…)
Just before I left for Japan in November last year I was invited to attend the launch of Men Inc. at Lucky’s Bar in QT Canberra. As a part of this fantastic event I was given a gift-bag full of goodies, which included a voucher for a free haircut or shave at the QT barber.
Now, I have a wonderful hairdresser who I have been seeing for almost 8 year, so I was never going to get my haircut, but I have been curious about getting a cut-throat razor shave for a really long time, so last week I booked in for The Don – a 30 minute cut throat razor shave for $45 (more…)
This fantastic event kick-started the series, which will be held every Thursday until the end of the year. Lucky’s Speakeasy and The Barber Shop at QT Canberra have joined forces to bring a brilliant line-up of grooming, style and lifestyle help for Canberra’s gentlemen. There’ll be ‘late night touch ups’ available until 9:30pm in The Barber Shop, men’s tailoring whilst drinking an old fashioned in Lucky’s Speakeasy, a How to Dress Like James Bond night and other nights that focus on Summer Accessories, Summer Swimwear and Boys Toys.
I’ve been very lucky to be invited to two of the Canberra Centre’s #SS15 style events, which are bringing a collective of style influencers to Canberra to share their thoughts and expertise in their collective fields.
These events are part of the #SS15 programme and have been held in conjunction with QT Canberra and Lucky’s Speakeasy. The events have been emceed by Steven Wright and Sarah Kelly, the Canberra Centre’s local fashion experts, and have thus far been truly fantastic events that I have left feeling inspired for the season ahead.
Guests of the events have been treated to a Grooming Station by QT Canberra’s Barber Shop, delicious catering from within the Canberra Centre, stunning cocktails from QT’s Lucky’s Speakeasy, and of course complimentary Canberra Centre style bags to take home. (more…)
