There is something about the season of Autumn that just makes me want to immerse myself in nature.
Now, obviously just from looking at me you can tell I’m not exactly the rugged woodsman you probably think of when you hear something like “Autumn makes me want to immerse myself in nature”, but I really do love this season, and all the treats for the senses that it brings with it. The cold bite of the wind on my cheeks, the smell of wood smoke in the air, and the visual spectacle of the leaves bursting into brilliant colours before dropping to the ground. And then of course we have all the different wardrobe tune-ups that we make for the cooler seasons.
This autumn I have been lucky enough to be given a beautiful wooden watch from the babes at JORD wood watches, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The design of the unique watch makes it a perfect addition to my wardrobe for autumn and winter, and gives me all the feelings of immersing myself in nature without actually having to go outside.
Because yes, I am that prissy that I avoid going outside as much as possible. (more…)

What do you look for when you shop for a watch?
For myself, I don’t. I have something of a phobia of clocks and watches, and anything that reminds me that time is ticking by. It drives me insane, like Captain Hook (or was he more afraid of the crocodile?).
In any event, while I don’t wear a watch, I have shopped for plenty of watches in my time for friends and family, and I’m often struck by how inordinately expensive they can be, especially when you consider that your phone will happily tell you the time for no cost at all (and without that awful ticking sound). There seems to be a disconnect between quality, price and design where watches are concerned, with consumers rarely able to find a watch that ticks all three boxes.
Canberra Grammar student Riley Tanton clearly thought so himself when he established his company Millennial Watches. At just 17 years of age, Tanton has not only built his business from the ground up, but he has done so by creating a line of beautifully styled high-quality watches which he sells for just $59.70 AUD. Mid-way as we are now through Spring, it probably seems a little late to the party to be discussing the new spring/summer offerings from Canberra-based accessories label Casa Pavone. But with Fashfest over for another year, and the men of Canberra and the surrounding area faced with a whole slew of new seasonal occasions to dress for (Spring races, Spring weddings, Christmas and New Years…) I cannot think of a better time to talk through some of the stunning new pieces on offer to get us looking our best.
Created as a complimentary label to the designs they were creating with Braddon Tailors. Pip Morgan and Johnathon McFeat identified that there was a hole in the Australian market for men’s accessories of a really high quality; and knew that they were the ones to offer a solution with Casa Pavone.
Offering a well designed, high quality product is the key to the label, which prides itself on sourcing only the best English and Italian silks, searching through merchants pattern archives – in some cases back over 200 years, to source the materials used in their collections.
Quality is ensured in the final product through a partnership with a small family owned manufacturing company in Italy who create all the pieces for Casa Pavone by hand. With each piece being lovingly created by artisans, in very small quantities, we’re talking about bespoke menswear accessories which are filling a needy niche in the menswear marketplace. (more…)

Some people have jewellery, some people have hats. Some people sink their money into handbags, or their hair, or watch. For me though, the ultimate accessory is a good scarf.
When I turned 30 late last year I received some beautiful presents from my friends, ad in amongst them all was this light cotton scarf. The second I laid eyes on it I hated it. It was a gift from a darling friend whose taste I admire endlessly, and so I was sort of confused as to how this gift had gone so wrong to have me so instantly turned off by an accessory.
The thing is, the scarf is actually brilliant and I was not thinking straight. In my defence, I had had a bottle of champagne by that point. (more…)
The first time I watched a “What’s in my bag” video on YouTube I got a distinctly dirty feeling, like I had just stumbled upon a friend’s porn stash. There’s an element of titillation, and an element of disgust. Sure, you want to see what your friend is into (the teasing possibilities are truly endless); but you’re also sort of revolted more than you can explain. And that is how I felt when I shakily directed my cursor to the play button before watching my first video. You know that you shouldn’t… and yet you know that you’re absolutely going to any way!
To this day, I have probably watched over 200 “What’s in my bag” videos. (more…)
